What equipment do flaggers use?
The flaggers at Traffic Safety GA use the STOP/SLOW paddle as their primary device. It is used to signal motorists to stop, proceed or slow down.
Our flaggers have the options of using two sizes of STOP/SLOW paddles. The smaller size is 18 by 18 inches. The larger size is 24 by 24 inches and should be used when the roadway posted speed is 45 miles per hour or greater. It can be seen and recognized by motorists sooner.
Flaggers also use a flag which is a red square of cloth measuring at least 24 by 24 inches. Since the flag does not contain a message, the flagger must hold the flag properly and use the correct hand signals to instruct motorists. The flag is most commonly used on low-speed roads and/or low-traffic roads where traffic can best be controlled by a single flagger and in emergency situations.
