Flagger Operations Understand the basics

traffic safety

Flagger operations from Traffic Safety GA can help you keep your job site safe.

Often construction, hazardous conditions, and events can create a need for traffic to be paced and directed. In these situations, flaggers certified by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) are qualified to do the job.

What is the responsibility of a flagger?

Flaggers have the responsibility to protect the lives of workers and guide traffic safely past the work area while protecting themselves. At Traffic Safety GA, we provide flagger operation statewide. Our flaggers are experts and you can expect them to be courteous as they carry out their responsibility to instruct motorists.

What do flaggers wear?

At Traffic Safety GA, we require our flaggers to wear high-visibility safety apparel, a hard hat, safety footwear, and safety eyewear is also recommended. We ensure our flaggers’ appearance is always neat and clean to gain the respect of motorists and get your job done safely.

What equipment do flaggers use?

The flaggers at Traffic Safety GA use the STOP/SLOW paddle as their primary device. It is used to signal motorists to stop, proceed or slow down.

Our flaggers have the options of using two sizes of STOP/SLOW paddles. The smaller size is 18 by 18 inches. The larger size is 24 by 24 inches and should be used when the roadway posted speed is 45 miles per hour or greater. It can be seen and recognized by motorists sooner.

Flaggers also use a flag which is a red square of cloth measuring at least 24 by 24 inches. Since the flag does not contain a message, the flagger must hold the flag properly and use the correct hand signals to instruct motorists. The flag is most commonly used on low-speed roads and/or low-traffic roads where traffic can best be controlled by a single flagger and in emergency situations.
