There are a wide variety of uses for traffic cones. The most popular is for road work and construction to help guide traffic safely through these zones. Traffic cones are also used at event sites and in parking lots to guide drivers to the intended zones. Traffic cones can also be used to mark off hazards and indicate areas of caution. There are even recreational uses for traffic cones including sporting events and for various exercises.
Various Sizes
Traffic cones come in various sizes, but MUTCD regulates which sizes can be used for the purpose of directing traffic. Traffic cones are measured by height. Traffic cone dimensions come in 6”, 12”, 18”, 28”, and 36”. Only cones between 18” and 28” can be used on roadways and there are speed limitations for cones based on sizes. It is important to remember you will need a permit usually issued by the city, or county government to use traffic cones in public roadways.
Various Customizations
There are several customizations that can be made to cones. Cones come in several colors, but color designates a specific use. For example, Orange Cones indicate traffic safety while black cones are used in funerals. MUTCD requires that cones used for traffic have reflective collars, but if you don’t plan on using the traffic cones in the road this is not needed. There are also several accessories that can be added to your cones including sandbags, flashers, and bases.
